The news has built upon the growing list of achievements of Parkeon in Australia, where the UK (Poole)-based operation of the company is already working on mass transit ticketing program. The Sydney electronic ticketing system project includes the installation of Wayfarer200 series driver consoles by Parkeon on 4,500 buses, and also its back office software suite.
The on-vehicle system is a major element of the scheme which was put forward by the Pearl Consortium, a Cubic-led partnership, which in addition to Parkeon, also includes a reputed engineering company, Downer EDI; the largest bank in the country, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia; and a leader in providing pre-paid products to retailers, epay Australia.
Managing Director of Parkeon Transit Ltd, Owen Griffith, said that, “This latest success underlines the quality of the ticketing technology being developed by our engineers in the UK – and confirms our ability to provide smart ticketing solutions for complex mass transit systems both in the UK and overseas. In Sydney, commuters will use smart cards to travel on ferries, trains and buses, with operators employing ‘tag-on’, ‘tag-off’ technology to apply correct fares.”
The announcement which was made has brought a series of contract gains for Parkeon in Europe, which includes a major project with Lille Métropole Urban Community in France for the development of multi-modal ticketing system which will assist in the management of over 152 million journeys every year. In Lille, Parkeon will also deliver 1,200 on-bus remote validators, 750 electronic ticket machines, over 500 subway, station and tram validators and an extensive range of vending machines and sales terminals in addition to the back office systems.
