Japan's shoreline might have moved by near about 13 feet to the east after Friday's 8.9 Magnitude quake, based on experts. Statistics from the nation's Geonet network of around 1,200 GPS monitoring stations imply a big dislodgment following the huge earthquake.
Dr. Roger Musson from the BGS (British Geological Survey) told that the shifting observed after the earthquake was "in line with what you get when you have an earthquake this big".
The quake perhaps moved Earth on its axis by about 16.5 cms and caused the earth to revolve somewhat quicker, shortening the span of the day by about 1.8 millionths of a second. Meteorological agency of Japan has planned upgrading the magnitude of the quake to 9.0. This will make it the joint 5th biggest earthquake since instrumental records started, but other agencies have not yet followed suit.
Japan lies on the notorious "Ring of Fire", the line of common quakes and volcanic outbreaks that surrounds virtually the whole Pacific Rim. The opaque rock making up the Pacific Ocean's base is being pulled down (sub ducted) under Japan as it shifts westwards towards Eurasia.
Dr Brian Baptie, from the British Geological Survey, described that the quake happened on the subduction zone along with 2 tectonic plates, the Pacific plate to the east and another plate to the west, which many geologists stare as a persistence of the North American plate.
As the Pacific plate shifts westwards beneath Japan, it pulls the North American plate downwards and westwards with it. As a quake happens, the upper plate staggers upwards and eastwards, releasing sprain built up as the 2 plates crush against one another.
In the latest case, this shift gave a kick to the seabed, displacing a big amount of water and leading to the tsunami waves which overwhelmed coastal regions in the Sendai region."The Pacific plate has shifted an utmost of 20 meter westwards, but the quantity of shift will differ even within the fault," Dr Musson asserted. "That does not mean the entire nation has movement by that amount because the real dislodgment will decay further from the fault."
