BASIC nations to meet in Delhi to talk about climate change

Environment Ministers from BASIC nations - Brazil, Nigeria, India and China - will come across in Delhi on Sat. to evaluate the post Cancun weather change actions and policy at the universal and national level and discuss synchronization going forward.

Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Jairam Ramesh asserted: "Over the past 15 months, BASIC has turn out to be an effective force within the weather change discussions. The BASIC Ministers have been meeting frequently since Copenhagen to exchange views and evolve a synchronized approach to vital negotiating issues."

"We will work closely to guarantee an optimistic outcome at Durban and beyond, while advancing the interests of our countries and partners," he added. The 2 day summit will likely be in a "BASIC Plus" system. India has also requested to the Ministers of 3 other nations – Algeria, Argentina and Maldives -to the meeting.

These countries represent vital regional groups within the "China and G-77" bloc in the climate change negotiations, and will participate in the meeting as Observers. This is in keeping with the BASIC tradition of involving chief regional groups within G-77 and China in order to enhance debate and represent the interests of promising economies (nations).

Maldives is a member of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in addition to being an adjacent nation from the South Asia. Algeria symbolizes the developing nations in Africa, whilst Argentina will be the present Chair of the Group of 77 and China.

BASIC nations' meeting is significant as it'll be the first key international meeting of any group of countries since Dec. 2010 when Cancun Agreements had been reached under the leadership of Mexico as the Chair of 16th Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol. The Basic group was formed in Beijing in November 2009.
