A court in Ecuador has fined United State oil firm Chevron a reported $8bn for polluting a large part of the country's Amazon region. The oil company Texaco, which amalgamated with Chevron in year 2001, was blamed of dumping millions of gallons of toxic matter into unlined pits and Amazon rivers.
Last year's drought in the Amazon raises concerns about the region's capacity to keep absorbing carbon dioxide, scientists say. Researchers report in the journal Science says that the 2010 drought was more widespread than in 2005 - the last massive one - with more trees possibly lost.
Emergency squads in Brazil are unable to achieve areas suffering from lethal mudslides and floods simply due to renewed rainfall. Government say more than five hundred people are known to have died in the floods - the nations nastiest in decades.
