BSkyB profits rise despite slowdown in subscriber growth

BSkyB has registered a boost in first-quarter earnings with more consumers purchasing broadband. The satellite broadcaster, which also proffers internet and telephony, registered a 32 percent increase in operating profits to £327 million for the 3 months to September 30. A boost of 150,000 broadband subscribers made up for an anticipated downturn in new subscribers.

Average income per user raised £25 from a year before to £535 a year. The number of consumers taking all 3 of broadband, telephony and TV rose by 29 percent to 2.9mn. "In harsh market circumstances, our budge to more widely based growth and numerous items are serving us well," whispered CEO Jeremy Darroch.

BSkyB has been focusing on promoting its consumers to take up all 3 of its services, as the harsh monetary environment is making it difficult to draw attention of new users. It signed up 26,000 new consumers to its pay-TV service in the quarter, compared with 96,000 in the similar time previous year.

SkyB was set to be purchased by its biggest shareholder Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation until the phone hacking scandal started in July. News Corporation is holding its yearly general meeting last this week and is anticipated to face some stakeholder dissent about the way the firm is running. Rupert Murdoch is both chief executive and chairman of the parent firm, with his son James as deputy COO. Some stakeholders are intending to vote against the re-election of quite a few directors to the board, consisting Rupert Murdoch.
