Belgium, Luxembourg and France are to bail out the embattled Dexia Bank, following worries it might go bankrupt. The government of Belgium is going to purchase the bank's unit in Belgium for $5.4 billion. And the finance minister of Luxembourg whispered a Qatari investment group was all set to purchase the bank's Luxembourg division.
Trading in Dexia's shares, which had been poised, started again on Monday afternoon. The cost instantly fell thirty six percent prior to recovering a bit. The bailout strategy for Dexia came after President of France Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel decided Europe's crisis-hit banks required to be recapitalized.
Dexia also secured state guarantees of up to ninety billion euros to protect borrowing over the upcoming ten years. Belgium is going to present 60.5 percent of these guarantees, Luxembourg 3 percent and France 36.5 percent, the bank whispered in a statement. Belgian P.M. Yves Leterme said: "We found a contract on the fair distribution of the prices associated with the management of the 'rest bank'."
The Belgian division is mainly a retail operation of 6,000 employees, managing deposits totaling 80 billion euros for 4 million consumers. Dexia requested for help for the 2nd time in 3 years after a liquidity squeeze sent its shares plummeting. In year 2008 it had bailed out, with the French, Luxembourg and Belgian governments putting in 6.4 billion euros to keep it afloat.
